Are You Running A Business Or Running A Blog Site?

This post was most recently updated on March 26th, 2014

Are You Running A Business Or A BlogWordPress blogs are my favorite!  I have one and as things change, we must keep things up to date on our blog.  Now I choose not to spend time on this, but rather hire someone to do it for me.  I’m not a do-it-yourself kinda gal when it comes to this.

Blog maintenance and optimization is the technical side of my business. I’d rather pay to play when it comes to this.

So, where do I go when things need updating?  What happens when there is a problem with a plug in?

I have some friends who have actually lost their blog sites, or had some big trouble when random techie things went wrong… as they always do!  So I don’t go there because I’m not a techie!   Nor do I want to spend all that time on learning curves, when I could be spending that time on my relationship building and marketing.

Here are things that I do not do because it can compromise my blog:

Back up my blog – how do I do that?

Update my blog to the latest WP version – well we all know if we don’t back it up, stuff can be lost.  Do I close my eyes and just press update?  That gives me a 50/50 chance, lol.

What about security?  Heck there are all kinds of ways to secure my blog that I have no idea about.

And then there is Load Time:  Now I was doing a check on this subject and found out that it is so important that my blog is loading in a timely fashion.  It’s a key factor in how your pages and posts get ranked in the search engines.  But what do I know about making my blog load faster?

SEO:  OMG.  That one drives me crazy!

And there is so much more to it!

If I had to figure this all out during the course of my day, it wouldn’t leave me room to roll up my sleeves and handle the core of my business which is making money!  I don’t blog for fun you know!  Do you?

So here’s the thing:

Are you a person that is a techie and a do it yourself blogger?  Do you have all that time in the world to tinker with this stuff, and hope you got it right?  Well, if you do, kudos to you my friend.  Maybe you do it because you can.  But couldn’t you be more effective creating great content and promoting it instead of tinkering?

I once had a neighbor who had a beautiful vintage car in his garage.  He was always working on it.  I asked him once why he never drove it.  “I can’t… too busy working on it” he said.

If you are focused on building your online blogging business and don’t want to just hang out in the garage “fixing” it all the time, I want to introduce you to something that my friend Kimberly Castleberry has put together for us.

Kim has become my life saver!  Anytime I have any tech trouble whatsoever, she has always come to rescue me and fix things.  Her experience with WordPress is amazing and if you know her, you know what I’m talking about.   If you don’t, just check out her experience on her blog, just-ask-kim (dot com).

Kim has put together a service which will save you time and give you the freedom you need to go about your business, not drown in it.

Imagine your productivity rate going higher:

Without having to worry about your blog anymore
Without touching your WordPress admin panel
Without having to think if you have done the backup or not
Without spending a fortune for someone to maintain your blogs

And how about having:

•    Blog/plugin installations and upgrades
•    Automatic blog backups stored on several locations for extra security
•    Email support with good response times
•    Blog monitoring uptime
•    Blog security audits and enhancements

PLUS…..

•    Sitemap generation and submission to major search engines
•    SEO audit and advice for all the blogs covered by your plan
•    Google Analytics reporting for all the blogs covered by your plan

Now I’m not an affiliate of this program, but when I see a good thing I like to pass it on.  Especially when it comes from a well trusted friend and a true professional.

I urge you to check out this amazing service so you can have the time, like me, to focus on what really matters in your business.

Here’s the link: http://just-ask-kim.com/services/wpmp/

Please leave your thoughts on this below in the comment section.  I would love to see what you think!

Blessings,

Donna

    Hi Donna,
yes, WordPress is great and the availability of plugins is endless.

The updating of things can be daunting and the first few times I found it nerve wrecking, especicially when the screen said ‘No data received’. Fortunately everything was alright.

I fully understand why people leave this job to an expert and Kim Castleberry is definitely one of those!!
At this time some hickup with a plugin is stretching my patience. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a budget that allow for employing experts?

    Thank you for sharing this.
    Cheers,

      Hi Yorinda,

I have to leave this to Kim because she is the expert at it and I have no time to fool around and learn this aspect of the business.

I tried once and lost so much time, it drove me nuts!

    Hi Donna!

As someone who is a bit of a geek when it comes to WordPress and loves building and tinkering, I certainly don’t have all of the time in the world or the know-how to fix everything.

Kim is a life-saver and someone who blows my mind with the amount of knowledge and know-how she has each and every time I talk to her. She is so willing to help and always super quick to respond. Sadly, that’s not a trait I have found to be consistent in most people that specialize in WordPress.

I’m so glad to see you singing her praises!

You have said it when it comes to Kim! She has been my life-saver for years now. And she does blow my mind with all the knowledge she shares.

She has helped me so much through the years and still does. This is why I am so excited about what she has put together.

    Hi Donna,

This is an excellent article and I know many-many people who can’t get anything done because they can’t figure out how to take care of the ‘techie’ stuff and until they see it fixed, they can’t move.

To me, coming from IT background, I realized that this techie stuff was my niche and I spent a good amount of my time learning this and now, I run a managed WordPress hosting service for my clients who don’t want to worry about this technological issues.

To me, learning was a curve, but I turned that as a product offering and not just a skill I need to maintain my own blog. It pays me to keep up and it helps me to be on top of my own blog and other websites.

But if somebody doesn’t enjoy working with these techie things, they should rather focus on their strengths and let this stuff be taken care by somebody else. Thank you for this excellent article.

Very Cool, Donna. I love Kim BRINK (it’s going to be hard to get used to the new name), too. Her blog is a treasure trove, and I will give serious consideration to her service. I do a lot of stuff on my own, but it is a slow go while I learn how to do it. Thanks for this heads up. I always call Kim the gal who does all the work so you don’t have to.

    Donna,

LOVE IT! Kimberly is such a great and dependable resource for taking care of one’s WordPress site.

Every single book on success that you read says to focus on what you do well and NOT focus on doing everything. Example: Mick Jagger walks out on stage and he sings, that’s it! He doesn’t plan the stage show, or the itinerary or hiring and firing roadies or press releases. He just sings and he does quite well for himself.

If you started a blog to share information, then share that information and hire someone else to maintain the tech aspects as well!

Thanks for that anaology of Mick Jagger! It is so true that we need to focus on what we do well at and not focus on everything.

What a funny picture in my mind watching Mick Jagger setting up the stage. Then getting up to sing and being to exhausted to shake that bootie of his lol.

    Hi Donna,

Well, I thought doing all of ’em are pretty fun things to do 😉 You know, being up-to-date and trying to fix things out. But I get it when you say “Are you running a blog or a business?” 🙂

Sometimes, when I work with some overseas clients, they are expecting me to do some stuff that they could possibly did by themselves. It was alright, but I thought “WHY?”.

Not knowing how to do and being afraid of what could be happened, keeping ’em away from doing it by themselves. Then, I got to know how busy they are too. Gosh… Real busy. A client of mine couldn’t find a time for two days to reply an email and she was working so hard at work or long hours.

Compared to them, I really really grateful for the life I’m having Donna 🙂

I think we all know about Kim 🙂 She’s always on top of everything when it comes to WordPress and Social Media. Plus, catches every update and share on her Facebook page. A helpful personality who deserve the shout out here 🙂

You have a lovely day and hope you are counting days dear 😉

Some of that stuff I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole! Too much work for me to do. You are also a great go-to person.

I know what you mean when you thought “hey why don’t these people do it themselves?” Yes, we each have to “pick our poison” and delegate things that may slow us down.

This is my first comment here, and what a first post to comment on! I’ve read a couple of posts on techiness today, and this post here seals the deal that it is crucial.
I’m not too techy either when it comes to backing up and SEO, but I’ve been managing thus far. I wasn’t aware that updating WordPress posed such a risk, so thank you for mentioning that here. I’ll be a lot more careful from this point on.

I looked at the service at Just-Ask-Kim, and it’s certainly something I want to invest in. Better not to trifle with things we don’t understand and suffer the consequences. If it weren’t for Mayura, my blog wouldn’t even be up.

Donna-I am not techie either. I have also hired someone to maintain the blog site. I have no idea what a pluggin is all I know that I get told I need them. One of the best things you can do in business is to delegate. It is so important to remember to backup everything you do. Naturally I had no idea how to do backups. When we created the blog site, it is a page from the main website, so my site is backed up daily through my server. With that said, it is extremely expensive. The points you made are valid.

I guess I’m a techie person. I’ve done everything on my site myself, with WordPress’s help. I’m very proud of it, even though I know a professional could improve it. I learned much of my techie stuff, like SEO and the best plugins, from Nathalie Lussier. She is a goddess when it comes to that stuff. I was experienced with HTML way before I started a website for my business, so I guess I had a head start. If I did hire an assistant, I would love someone to do all my social media stuff. That’s where I waste the most time. 🙂

    Hi Donna,

That must be so nice to just be able to focus on your work and not have to tinker around in the engine room.

When I first started blogging I didn’t know where to turn for help and had to get in there myself and “suss it out” as best I could for the task I had to complete.

I dread to think how much time I spent on different issues over the years, but it has got easier… In some aspects 😉

I wasted a complete week once trying to find the cause of high CPU usage, leading to 500 error messages. Only to find out it was a hosting issue… I changed hosting after that.

I still need to go in at times and complete certain things myself but if I run into trouble I now know who to turn to for advice.

I do my own back ups and installations but did run into trouble with the last WP update so had to get HG to sort it out, which they did.

I’ll head over and check Kim’s offer out, thanks for bringing it to our attention Donna.

    Have a great week,
    Barry

      Hi Barry,

For me, my time is money! It has to be on a tight Time Management schedule. Tinkering with my blog was something I never could figure out.

It is like trying to do my own plumbing….If I have a leak, I’ll call a plumber!

Whenever I had a problem, I would Ask Kim to fix it and she would always go the extra mile for me.

So now, that she has this all put together, I don’t have to contact her a bizillion times, rather all I have to do is sign in. No more worries!

I wrote this post for people like me who want to keep tabs on their blog, but rather put their energies on other aspects of their business.

      Thanks for coming by!

Great Post Donna. I am not a techy person what so every but I am learning more then I ever thought possible. I am fortunate to have a son who is a computer geek. ( I did put him through school to do so) He does live 100 miles away though but this does give me a good reason to go and visit my grandson HEHE Thanks for sharing

      Hi Chery,

Thank goodness for our kids! I had my daughter come visit me to teach me how to use my IPhone, and I still get confused he he.

Kim did put together this awesome product and now instead of emailing her tons of times, it is all in one place! Phew!

    Hi Donna,

Well, as you probably know I am not a techie person, but I’ll do the basis that I can do.

However, few weeks ago as I was having some hosting issues that I couldn’t possibly fix on my own I asked for help, and so gladly paid for it too.

It was well worth it as Mayura, who help me fix my issues, also notices a lot of things that weren’t right and fixed everything and some for me. Now, my back office is so much cleaner and everything is working perfectly.

As I always say, we can’t be good at everything, not everyone can be a techie.

    have a great week Donna!

      Hi Sylviane,

You are too creative to be too techie Sylviane! All that writing you do…there couldn’t be time to figure out all that techie stuff.

Oh Mayura is such a Godsend for us all. Even his techie posts makes sense because he always teaches us a lesson.

    You know my answer Donna…

I HAD to learn a lot of this myself when I first started mainly for two reasons. 1) I had no clue who to ask if I wanted and 2) I couldn’t afford to hire anyone. I had to teach myself most of what I know now but the hard part thank goodness I have made those connections online and I have people to help me now.

That’s an awesome service Kim is providing. Bravo to her, I wouldn’t touch that for anything.

For those that need the help it sounds like she’s got them covered. Thanks for introducing this service to everyone.

      Hey Adrienne,

Well when I was writing this post, I thought of you too. I said to myself Adrienne is that kind of gal that knows all about those plug ins and tech stuff.

On our masterminds when you explain things like this I sometimes feel like I’m ADHD he he….

You have pulled me out of some rough spots too! Remember when all my social links didn’t work. I was so confused and it took you a few minutes to fix my blog. I’ll never forget that one! It was like you had a magic wand to me.

      Thanks,

    Hi Donna,

    1. I think I’ve got the idea. What’s the most important thing? Do business. So you need to focus on what makes your business thrive meaning what makes you money. Most of the time this is exactly the ability that you love most.
Unfortunately, when you are a beginner and alone you cannot outsource and you must do all the job. Absolutely everything.

    2. Did you say “affiliate”? I don’t know but whenever I hear this word, I become very attentive. I will surely check the program. Maybe it has an affiliates section where you can promote it. This would be very, very interesting.

    Have a nice day

      Hi Silviu,

      1. For the beginner it is good to learn all this tech stuff if there is no cash reserve. For me, before I enter any business, I like to have that cash reserve in order to make it function. It can be on line or off line.
I knew my strengths and weaknesses, therefore I needed to have my cash reserve for all things I must spend to keep my eye on the ball when it comes to making a cash flow.

      2. This is not an affiliate program. Kim has lots of stuff she does affiliate but this is not one of them. I shared this for people like me, who just want to have someone that is well known in the business and well trusted.

When I see a good thing, I like to spread the word.

    Hi Donna

Now you know me! I am right with you and do not like or want to do the techie stuff. I do not like it so it takes me so long to figure stuff out it is a bad business decision for me to do it myself.

Kimberly has helped me out on many occasions. I know she was talking about having this service way back and I am excited to read about it here. I will check it out more.

Thanks for writing about it Donna.

      Hi Sue,

I was thinking of you when I wrote this post. We are on the same page when it comes to techie stuff.

I am so happy Kim put this together. Now I don’t even have to go into my back office for ANYTHING! She sends reports how things are doing via email so I am kept up to date on just about everything on my blog.

Phew! Finally all the stuff I need in one place! I knew you would like this.

    Hi Donna,

I can SO well relate to that because I’m a lot like you where handling the tech stuff is concerned 🙂

Yes, a little bit I can manage on my own, but I’m lucky as my hubby does the rest for me and that is a big time saver for me, or else I’d forever be working on the tech things and not be able to concentrate on my work and blog as such.

The small things I do manage on my own, thanks to my other tech blogging friend’s who share informative tutorials about it, while the other major tweaks are left for hubby dear.

Ah…who doesn’t know Kim and she truly IS the best person for WordPress. I saw a video of yours with her, I think in an earlier post, or was it a Google Hangout where she explained you how to make a page or something on your own – what a sense of achievement that was for you. She is an awesome blogger and it’s a pleasure to know her, especially her informative posts 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena!

Wow…husbands do come in handy! Mine isn’t a big techie, but does all my other technical stuff I just don’t want to do.

When it comes to my WordPress blog, even he doesn’t want to touch mine or his. We do use Kim.

Aha…(pardon the pun) You remember that video I did with Kim. Yes it was a candid one. I was up at 2 a.m. and I had no idea what she was going to do. All she said was “Can you do me a favor and come onto G+? Of course…She knew how I was all thumbs when it comes to anything technical. She showed me in 20 minutes how to install a fantastic plugin which I use …. to do a sales page.

      Thanks for stopping by,

I love this post Donna. And I am a techie kind of girl, but there is nothing I hate worse that updating my wordpress. So I do have a solution too. Different than yours, but so worth it.

I agree. I don’t have all the time in the world. You need to get on with the business of running your business, not worried about whether your plugin meshes with the new update. 😉

When it comes to WP back ups and security and all the rest of the stuff I need to do, It takes me so much time. I’m so not a techie kind of gal so I know I can screw things up fast he he.

When Kim came out with this I wanted to spread the word to those who are just like me!
